Badgers men's basketball: Nebraska upsets Wisconsin in quarterfinals of Big Ten tournament

1-1 0-0 2, Shields 6-15 8-9 20, Parker 3-3 6-6 12.

Maryland led by as many as 23 in the second half before Nebraska closed to 92-86 with 1:37 to play.

In 36 minutes, he finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and two assists, all of which led the Cornhuskers.

Layman set the tone with his early shooting. He had 13 points in the first half Thursday.

"I like to think I'm a captain of this team", said Shields, who did not play in the February 10 meeting between the two teams. "That's a way a senior should go out".

A trio of Nebraska basketball players were honored, as the Big Ten Conference announced its 2016 awards Monday evening. He was a star shooting guard on the Rutgers team that reached the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament in 1976. The Badgers shot better than 50 percent from the field in an 11-point victory. Melo Trimble scored 16, Robert Carter had 13 and Rasheed Sulaimon finished with 10. They were only 4-for-20 on 3-pointers. Senior forward Donovon Jack added 18 points and senior forward Brandon Taylor had 14.

"I witnessed not only a great game at last year's men's basketball playoff, but also a ideal example of what the atmosphere for Ivy League tournaments will be", Dartmouth AD Harry Sheehy said. "I was trying to stay aggressive".

"He's their best player on both ends of the floor and I knew that was going to be a factor", said Wisconsin coach Greg Gard.

As a result, third-seeded Maryland (24-7) will play the Cornhuskers, who beat Rutgers in the play-in game Wednesday, in the quarterfinals Friday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The second-seeded Spartans advanced with an 81-54 victory over Ohio State. "Fortunately, we will have one more". "They're a top team in the country and obviously it's hard to discredit them at this point".

Ethan Happ led the Badgers with 17 points.

"As the captain of the team I felt like I added a different element to the game that helped us win", Shields said. The sophomore guard has averaged 18.0 points in his last three games, almost doubling his 9.8 clip from the previous four.

Rutgers played 19 total games this season against Big Ten opponents. Jake Layman scored 26 points to lead Maryland.

Shields earned All-Big Ten honors for the second time in his career, as he was a second-team All-Big Ten pick by the coaches and a third-team selection by the media.

The loss ended an injury-plagued season in which Rutgers (7-25) won just one conference game, that win coming against under-manned Minnesota on the final day of the regular season.

Maryland advances to Saturday's Big Ten semifinals, where it will face Michigan State.
