Fans were recently left rocked by the news that Keith Emerson has passed away yesterday at the age of 71; however, the news has taken a turn for the worse with confirmation by police that his death is being investigated as a potential suicide.

Inspired by Jimi Hendrix's theatrics with the electric guitar, Emerson was famous for his showmanship and outlandish on-stage performance style.

The body of the Emerson, Lake and Palmer co-founder was discovered by his girlfriend at their Santa Monica home on Thursday (10Mar16).

Born on November 1, 1944, in the English town of Todmorden, Emerson was classically trained on the piano as a child and started his career playing R&B.

"Keith was a gentle soul whose love for music and passion for his performance as a keyboard player will remain unmatched for many years to come", Palmer said in a statement.

He helped form The Nice in 1967 before starting ELP in 1970 with former King Crimson guitarist Greg Lake and drummer Carl Palmer. "The music was always in his head, always", Kawaguchi said, according to The Associated Press news agency.

Hailed as a keyboard legend, Emerson was one of the most important figures to emerge from the thriving United Kingdom rock scene of the 1960s and 1970s.

'I am very lucky to have known him and to have made the music we did together.

But Emerson was considered the first to make the synthesizer a central rock instrument on its own, taking it on tour.

The trio won a wide following around the world but especially in Britain, where several albums including "Tarkus", "Trilogy" and "Brain Salad Surgery" entered the top five on the chart.

A cause of death has yet to be determined, but a source tells the publication his passing was "sudden" as he had been due to embark on a tour of Japan next week.
