'Game of Thrones' earns a leading 23 Emmy Award nominations

Nominations for the 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced, as "Black-ish" star Anthony Anderson and "Gilmore Girls" star Lauren Graham announce 12 categories. Nominations were announced this morning and winners will be awarded on September 18.

Fantasy drama Game of Thrones has received 23 Emmy nominations, one more than its closest rival, crime series The People v OJ Simpson.

Supporting Actress in a Drama Series: Maggie Smith, Downton Abbey; Lena Headey, Game of Thrones; Emilia Clarke, Game of Thrones; Maisie Williams, Game of Thrones; Maura Tierney, The Affair; and Constance Zimmer, UnREAL.

It's the second year Chandler has been nominated for the show, which was just renewed for its third season.

Granted, it's still hard to understand why Orange Is the New Black didn't get an Emmy nomination for any of the stellar actresses either, but there is always next year, and we've seen the heights the show can reach.

Towson University graduate Amy Schumer was nominated for best actress in a comedy series for her performance on Comedy Central's "Inside Amy Schumer". The streaming service's "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" also did well, with nods for Best Series, Best Actress (first-time nominee Ellie Kemper), and Best Supporting Actor (returning nominee Tituss Burgess). With an astonishing 94 nominations, HBO is the most nominated network. Programs on Netflix received 54 nominations, including What Happened, Miss Simone?, the Netflix documentary about Nina Simone which is up for best documentary. Thank goodness the Emmys realized that for its supporting actor-in-a-comedy race. The HBO series wrapped up its last season, and was last year's victor for best comedy series.

Hiddleston is nominated for his role in the popular BBC series The Night Manager, while his co-stars Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman earned nods in the supporting role categories.

Instead, Jessica Jones only earned two nominations - Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music for Sean P. Callery's theme and Oustanding Main Title Design.

The British funnyman will also compete against Adele and Beyonce for the Emmy for outstanding variety special.

HBO's medieval fantasy "Game of Thrones", last year's victor, is seeking its sixth nomination in its six seasons. But while some series experienced their first nominations, others were subsequently left out this year. In the past, The Good Wife was a perennial Emmy favorite.

Graham is a celebrated actress, producer and novelist, best known for her iconic role in The WB series Gilmore Girls and is now in production on the highly-anticipated revival for Netflix, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. - "Better Call Saul" star Bob Odenkirk, who was walking his dog when he found out he was up for leading actor in a drama series.

Emmy nominations for "Outstanding Comedy Series" included some repeats from 2015 and a few new series.

Transparent will compete against some other gay faves: The Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, HBO's Veep and ABC's Modern Family.

This category is a gantlet that's hard for newcomers to muscle into, but "American Ninja Warrior" managed to complete the obstacle course this year for the first time in its three years of eligibility.

None of the outstanding drama series nominees has come from the four major broadcast networks for each of the past four years.

Last year's victor, HBO's "Veep", is likely to be among the seven nominees. Her nomination actually reads: "Tatiana Maslany as Sarah, Alison, Cosima, Helena, Rachel, M.K., Krystal".

Beyonce's film Lemonade took two nominations, with the singer receiving a personal nod for her directing work.
