Sweden are now guaranteed at least a silver for their first-ever medal in women's football and face Germany in Friday's Maracana final.

Rio de Janeiro, Aug. 17, (GNA/dpa) - Brazil crashed out of the Olympic football women's tournament in the semi-finals on Tuesday when they were beaten by Sweden in a penalty shoot-out at the Maracana Stadium, following a goalless draw.

Sweden beat the Americans in penalty kicks in the quarterfinal, a loss that prompted Solo's tirade against the team, which is coached by former USWNT coach Pia Sundhage.

"It was really amusing to take the last kick", Dahlkvist said.

Brazil went closest in the first half when Dahlkvist headed just wide of her own post following a tricky Marta corner, the Swedes escaping a potentially calamitous situation.

Lisa Dahlkvist scored the crucial penalty on Sweden's fifth attempt after Brazil's Andressa saw hers saved by Hedvig Lindahl. Sweden, ranked sixth in the world, will play secondranked Germany at the Maracana on Friday after they enjoyed a 2-0 win over Canada on Tuesday.

It's been a tough Olympic debut for central defender Kadeisha Buchanan, who has been one of Canada's most reliable players since breaking onto the scene three years ago.

Canada face Brazil in the bronze medal match Friday in Mineirao. "She created a couple of problems for us, but at the end of the day, trying to stop her, I think we did pretty good". She was voted world player of the year five times in a row between 2006 and 2010. "The fact that we have done something the Swedish national team has never done before, playing for a medal".

"The road we have taken has been different, a wonderful trip with one or two upsets". "We have the match for the bronze medal now, and we will fight until the end to get that medal". "We want to win the next game".

In the second session, neither team could score as both teams remained scoreless after 120 minutes.

Sweden was riding high after knocking off the three-time defending champion United States in the quarterfinals.

Brazil have been on fire in the men's football tournament to date, finally looking like they have regained that form that saw them dominate the worldwide game for so many years. It's hard to believe Sweden will play in the final. While Brazil maintained possession throughout most of the match, Sweden's defense pulled through.

Marta has scored 104 goals in 107 worldwide appearances.

"What people are saying in the media, it's not a big deal". I can only say frustration, no other way. "We talk about football".

In contrast, the bronze medal match will be more than familiar to both contenders - and not least Brazil, as the hosts vie for third place again after losing out in 1996 and 2000. She has 10 Olympic goals, tying her for third on the career list with Abby Wambach of the U.S.

Honduras have exceeded all expectations this Olympics, and are now two more wins away from realising their Olympic dreams. Both times, at the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Games, the United States won in the final.
