No. 6 Washington tops No. 23 Washington State 45-17

Chris Petersen refused to name names.

The Washington Huskies' 45-17 win over WSU in the Apple Cup was enough to give them a two-spot boost in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll.

He was essential on Washington's 10-play, 98-yard touchdown drive that put UW ahead 42-17 in the fourth quarter and basically ended the game, and he has been a reliable, productive No. 2 back all season.

Washington's dominant 45-17 win over No. 23 Washington State on Friday was complete affirmation of what Petersen has accomplished in three seasons in charge of the Huskies. Defensive back Kevin King said that whatever bluster the Cougars displayed at the outset, it dissipated quickly as the Huskies took control of the game.

Mitch Trubisky threw three touchdown passes for the Tar Heels (8-4, 5-3), including a 48-yarder to Bug Howard that made it a seven-point game with 7:52 left.

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Iowa's victory guarantees that No. 6 Wisconsin will represent the Big Ten West Division in Indianapolis for next week's conference championship game.

Cougars coach Mike Leach and others have questioned the accuracy of police descriptions of the case, in which a man accused Tago and others of assaulting him and stealing his beer. After Houston destroyed number five Louisville last night, the College Football Playoff picture just got shaken up again. "It's definitely sweet for me and sweet for this program".

Washington, meanwhile, looked every bit the part of potential competitor in the national championship that will follow the traditional bowl contests.

Washington tied a school record with the 28-point first quarter and the four straight over the Cougars (8-4, 7-2, No. 23 CFP) is the longest streak since the Huskies won six straight between 1998-2003.

Leach, however, called the Huskies a viable candidate for the four-team national playoffs.

Washington: The Huskies will face either Colorado or Southern California in the Pac-12 championship game next Friday.

Pettis' right arm helped the Huskies soften WSU's defense early.

The Huskies bamboozled their rivals from the start, gaining 50 yards on a double pass on the game's fifth play, scoring moments later and getting the ball back on a Jamal Morrow fumble near midfield. Pettis' hands took over from there, as he hauled in an 18-yard strike from Jake Browning to make it 14-0.

PASSING-Washington, Browning 21-29-0-292, Pettis 1-2-0-50.

Iowa broke open what was expected to be a tight game with a 75-yard TD run by Akrum Wadley and a 77-yard touchdown throw from Beathard to Riley McCarron in the first quarter.

Browning was 13 for 17 for 202 yards and had all three of his touchdown passes in the first quarter, vaulting himself back into the Heisman Trophy discussion with just nine days remaining before finalists are announced.

Washington passed its final test of the regular season thanks to one almost ideal quarter that delivered a 45-17 win against Washington State on Friday.

In those three games, Leach's teams have been outscored 121-40, and Friday's result was perhaps the worst WSU has looked in that span.

This is why the last two games - a blowout of Arizona State and the romp over Washington State - eased those concerns and made the slog against USC appear as the outlier.

"It means a lot, but at the end of the day it's about us".

After the game, Petersen was asked about the Governor's Trophy, broken en route to Pullman sometime Thursday.

"If they left those decisions to me, heck, we'd all have a lot of fun", he said. The culprit remains at large. "I went with the strength of our team in those scenarios and, unfortunately, we didn't get it done".

There were plenty of heroics to point out for the Huskies on Friday. But he was picked up nicely by backup tailback Lavon Coleman, who rushed for 82 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries and is now up to 735 yards rushing this season. UW's offensive line didn't allow a sack.

After they had thoroughly turned away Luke Falk and Washington State's "Air Raid" offense, members of Washington's "Death Row" defense turned their attention to the Martin Stadium crowd. "We just got outmuscled by another team. But this is our favorite game of the year and I hope (the Cougars) continually do exactly what they're doing because this is an awesome game to play". Petersen wouldn't implicate the culprit but said it was barely touched and snapped.
