"Had Mahi [MS Dhoni] taken the decision one year or even six months earlier, I would have been a bit anxious", said Prasad. Shastri, who was Indian cricket team's director for almost two years, said he has never seen Dhoni lose his composure.

A transition in Indian cricket is taking place not just at the administrative level. Dhoni promoting himself up the order in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka in Wankhede still remains one of the boldest and game changing decisions of Indian cricket.

Dhoni, 35, announced his decision to relinquish the captain's armband in limited overs cricket on Wednesday (4 January) less than two weeks before the series against England.

Did Mahendra Singh Dhoni pre-empt a move by the national selectors to replace him as limited overs captain with Virat Kohli?

Speakig to India TV on Cricket Ki Baat, Shastri said he has never seen a player with the type of temperament that Dhoni has.

The committee will meet on Friday, January 6 to select the team for the three-match ODI series against England.

With Tendulkar, Dravid and Sourav Ganguly expressing their unwillingness to play in the inaugural ICC Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007, Dhoni was named the captain.

There was always this doubt about the communication part - who will reason with him that it is time for Kohli to take charge. MS Dhoni is the only Indian captain to have led his side to all three major ICC tournaments.

Dhoni captained India in 199 ODIs and 62 T20Is and led the country to their second ODI World Cup in 2011 and into the semi-finals of the 2015 World Cup.

Rahul Johri, CEO of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, paid tribute to Dhoni's service as captain. He was captain in 60 Test matches, having won 27 and lost 18.

"Under his leadership, the Indian team has touched new heights and his achievements will remain etched forever in the annals of Indian cricket", he added.

This announcement should simply be seen as Dhoni's step down from the post as captain- another act of ideal timing from this masterclass.

It is expected that Virat Kohli, who leads the team in Tests, will be handed the reins for ODIs and T20s as well.
