Facebook And MTV Hire Will Strengthen Its Competition Against Netflix And YouTube

According to Bloomberg, Facebook has recently joined MTV executives Mina Lefevre, who has a extensive experience in the TV industry.

I have always been drawn to the idea of building something and the idea of being part of the team that helps build Facebook's original content ecosystem.well, that just seems like a dream!

In any case, Facebook is working hard to promote video content on its platform. From Faking It, Awkward, Finding Carter, Scream, Teen Wolf, Nicole Byer, Mary + Jane, Sweet/Vicious and Shannara...

Lefevre was hired at MTV in 2015, when her predecessor Susanne Daniels left the company to join YouTube.

The hiring of Lefevre was confirmed by Facebook to Quartz earlier today. Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported (paywall) that Facebook was developing an app for set-top boxes that would let users watch video from the social network on TVs.

Moreover, Lefevre will now be reporting directly to the co-founder of CollegeHumor, Ricky Van Veen, who joined Facebook past year to head the global creative strategy. The social networking giant is also said to be in talks with various media companies for licensing their original content, while also seeking publishers to create Facebook exclusives. Her new task is similar to what she has done at MTV on which she was the executive vice president as well as the head of scripted development. Facebook is aiming to have shows that will cater to a large audience similar to how Netflix and Amazon succeeded with "Stranger Things" and "Mozart of the Jungle", respectively.

Analysts believe that this focus on short clips rather than longer videos would work well with how most people use Facebook.
