Dr. David Altchek in NY - the same doctor who operated on Love's shoulder during the 2015 postseason - performed the surgery Tuesday morning, removing a "loose body" from Love's left knee. It was his first invite to the February festivities since joining the Cavs in 2014, and fourth overall. As invaluable as he is on the backboards, the Cavaliers will miss his presence on the three-point line, and this is a team that's been without fellow marksman J.R. Smith since mid-December.
The new injury comes after Love had seemingly moved past a back issue.
Kevin Love will rest his knee for the next six weeks.
Love, 28, underwent a scan on the knee on Sunday after experiencing pain in the joint during Saturday's 125-109 win over Denver. Cleveland has won five of six and leads the Eastern Conference by 2 1/2 games over Boston.
Love is averaging 20 points and 11.1 rebounds in his third season for the Cavaliers, who are in Minnesota - Love's former team - to play their second-to-last game before the All-Star break. An MRI was conducted as part of the player's evaluation, but a team source said that "we're not discussing that just yet".
James quickly dismissed any concerns about his workload, saying he's carried that burden for his entire career.
Coach Tyronn Lue is anxious about his big man's health.
"Always concerned when guys are going down", Lue said in a report by the Associated Press. Able to play either forward position, Williams' minutes off the bench will certainly increase as the Cavs look to replace Love's heavy scoring load. So our fans and the city of Cleveland is great for us. "We just play. Number one in the East or whatever, we don't talk about it". I know we will. "Health is more important to me right now, especially with guys being out".
