Mark Gottfried is out at NC State, but will coach the rest of the season, according to a report by WRAL's Jeff Gravley. Gottfried now holds a 122-81 all-time record at the school.
The downward spiral over the past two years and his messy exit will temporarily shroud the fact that his four consecutive tournament appearances to kick off his tenure were warmly welcomed by fans who watched the team missed March Madness in the previous five seasons under former coach Sidney Lowe.
And after a slow start to the 2016-17 season, including six consecutive losses and three by 20 or more points, the Wolfpack have made a decision to move on from Gottfried.
Gottfried has been at State for 6 years and has a record of 122-82 and 47-55 in ACC play during his time leading the Pack.
Gottfried's NC State team has floundered its way to a six-game losing streak that has included four blowouts by 20 points or more, which likely hastened this move.
Roy Williams has an overall record of 27-3 against North Carolina State as the UNC head coach and a 10-2 record against Gottfried.
"It's been a privilege to serve as coach of NC State, and I'm proud of what we accomplished during my time here", Gottfried said in a statement.
"Mark and I met today to discuss the future direction of our program", said NC State Director of Athletics DebbieYow.
NC State is now 14-12 this season with a 3-10 record in the ACC after losing five straight games. Since upsetting Duke on January 23, the Wolfpack have dropped six straight.
But N.C. State has slid to 30-30 over the past two seasons - including 8-24 in Atlantic Coast Conference play - and struggled to maintain continuity amid transfers, players leaving early to pursue professional playing careers, and staff turnover.
