Point guard Trae Young commits to Sooners

He's passionate for the game, he loves the game, and I can't wait to get to work with him. Kruger, 64, has coached at Texas-Pan American Kansas State, Florida, Illinois, UNLV and Oklahoma, where he has been since 2011. "It's always been home to me".

That's why John Calipari made the right gamble in taking Green in the fall vs waiting to potentially be spurned by Young in the spring and be left in a really bad spot for next year.

One thing I do wonder: Did Young pick OU in part because of uncertainty with about Kansas junior point guard Devonte' Graham's future? "I built relationships with a lot of coaches throughout the years".

The Sooners and coach Lon Kruger were the first school in Young's recruitment when the prospect was in eighth grade and play in his home town of Norman, Okla. This recruiting process has been very long, very tough.

Young brings a blend of scoring and facilitating to the table and he thinks he's a good fit alongside their talented freshman Kristian Doolittle and Kameron McGusty. "He lets his guards play the way I want to play". "Not necessarily be a Buddy Hield or a Blake Griffin but be a Trae Young and be a leader and help these guys and they would also help me with their experience in the Big 12 and the college game".

On top of becoming a potential impact player for Kruger, Young is arguably the Sooners' most high-profile commitment since signing future NBA All-Star Blake Griffin nearly a decade ago. Even with all that, this decision was mostly about family.

Both of those former OU players were major difference-makers in turning around the Sooner men's basketball program, and Young, who has shown tremendous talent and leadership ability at the point-guard position, will have the same opportunity.
