New York 16 and 17-year-olds Able to Join Organ Donation Registry

WHAT TO KNOW ON NATIONAL DONOR DAY

The law, which was signed by Cuomo in August, also gives legal guardians the right to rescind a minor's decision to donate her organs if she dies before age 18.

"An estimated 600 New Yorkers die every year while waiting for an organ transplant", Assembly Assistant Speaker Felix Ortiz said. "DMV, at our offices and through our website, is proud to be a part of this incredibly important effort".

Here in Colorado, there are 2,500 people waiting to get a life-saving transplant.

The province said organ donors saved 380 lives in 2015 in Alberta, which was an 11 per cent increase from 2014.

In 2012, DMV and the State Department of Health created a new way to enroll in the New York State Donate Life Registry online through MyDMV. The sign-up process takes all of 60 seconds.

To become an organ donor, all you need is your drivers license.

NY has the nation's lowest percentage of registered organ donors, and waiting lists for some organs, such as kidneys, can stretch years.

The annual Gift of Life Michigan Campus Challenge is underway across the Great Lakes State.
