But, the Shockers went on a run to build a four point lead before Derek Willis hit a three to cut the deficit to 37-36. The shots will be noted, but it's Monk's block on Markis McDuffie with 13 seconds left (followed by two free throws on the other end) that helped Kentucky advance to their 25th Sweet 16 appearance in school history.
"I was starting to get really comfortable", Shamet said. It was fitting that Adebayo ended that game; I wrote last week that he's the key to unlocking Kentucky's title hopes. "He's a great player and the refs let us be physical".
"We're going to play basketball", Fox told reporters. I was just playing solid. The yin-yang of United Kingdom is that the team plays so fast on offense (top 15 in tempo) yet tries to mill you into bad shots on defense.
The game itself went back and forth, but for Kentucky, Monk and Fox put aside freshmen jitters in the final five minutes of the game to come up huge on both sides of the ball.
Hawkins actually jumped a second time - after his first one on the pump-fake - and was asked after the game - and before replays of the final play had been widely spread - who actually got the blocked shot at the end. "So I just took the chances, driving in the lane and try to get some easy shots".
Wichita State is anything but a mid-major, by the way.
Hawkins stayed in Shamet's grill as the formidable Wichita guard tried to launch a game-tying three-pointer from the right wing- and then Abebayo arrived to swat the shot harmlessly to the court.
"Hard game to play", United Kingdom coach John Calipari said. Trash talking is not for me. "I just didn't do exactly what we needed to do there down the stretch on a few possessions".
Bam Adebayo was still the difference-maker against Wichita State.
That's not entirely Wichita State's fault - putting together a non-conference schedule is tricky, especially if you belong to a mid-major league - but there's not a lot the committee can do about it either. "They've got a couple of them".
Kentucky will now hold it's place in the Sweet 16 against the victor of UCLA and Cincinnati. Tip-off is scheduled for 9:39 p.m. ET on CBS.
It will be rematch of the two team's December 3rd matchup, when the Bruins beat Kentucky 97-92 at Rupp Arena.
The Shockers, a No. 10 seed in the South Region, defeated Dayton 64-58 in the tournament opener, while the Wildcats, seeded No. 2, held off instate foe Northern Kentucky 79-70 Friday night.
"It matters what we think". Center Bam Adebayo scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half.
The Wildcats head to Memphis next week to the NCAA Sweet 16 after win over Wichita State. Nobody could shut the big man down.
Throughout the week, Kentucky coach John Calipari had touted Adebayo's selflessness and willingness to defer to his teammates.
Many believe that it would be hard to draw Marshall away from Wichita State.
Franklin appeared to come out of this situation unscathed, saying the NCAA hasn't taken away his credentials for covering Kentucky next weekend.
When Kentucky takes the floor this coming Friday, it'll be in a bit of a familiar environment for Coach Cal.
