Andy Murray solidified his position at the top of the world rankings with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Spain's Fernando Verdasco to win the Dubai Tennis Championships on Saturday. Some tough rallies unfolded, and it looked like the game was headed for a third set, but Querrey held his nerve to win the second set and the title.
"When I play my best, I'm capable of beating a lot of these top guys and I've been able to put it all together these past three matches", said Querrey.
Seeking his first title this season and 70th overall, the 30-year-old Spaniard ran his Mexican Open winning streak to 14 matches and 28 sets. He was the tournament's champion in 2005 and 2013 on clay.
Nadal, the tournament victor in 2005 and 2013, had won 14 straight matches in Mexico.
Nadal will face the American Querrey, a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 victor over Australian Nick Kyrgios. "It's been a pleasure to play here", Querrey said. The eight-time tour victor defeated Britain's Kyle Edmund, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to get his campaign in Acapulco underway.
In the women's final, Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko defeated France's Kristina Mladenovic 6-1, 7-5.
The young Australian started the semi-final ferociously and had treatment on his elbow by the end of the second set.
The unseeded Querrey showcased masterclass tennis, winning the match by 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.
They met for the third time in the semifinals of the Davis Cup between Spain and U.S. on clay courts in 2008, it was another close encounter with the former world number one defeating Querrey, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.
Nadal has not fared well in recent years on hard courts. Sam Querrey is new champion of the Acapulco Open.
"Djokovic reached the Mount Everest of tennis a year ago after winning the French Open", Pilic, who guided the Serb as a junior at his Munich academy, told Bosnian daily Nezavisne. The 29-year-old claimed that trophy for the first time, having finished runner-up to Federer in 2012. "I hope to be prepared for it".
