President Trump said Friday that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping were making "tremendous progress" in forging a cooperative relationship during their first face-to-face meetings.
In February 2015, Obama asked Congress to formally authorize war against the Islamic State, saying the militant group could threaten the USA homeland if left unchecked. A bilateral meeting was planned for 10:30 a.m. Friday, followed by a 12 p.m. working lunch. Interestingly, Chinese investment in the USA more than tripled in 2016 to a record $45bn, but Trump remains critical of the nation's supposedly tight controls on foreign investment. Trump, a NY real estate magnate before he ran for office, joked before dinner: "We've had a long discussion already, and so far I have gotten nothing, absolutely nothing".
Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in Florida for his first official summit with the U.S. president.
But many industry groups and economists argue that Trump would be better off pushing China to open its markets. He noted the historic responsibility of both countries - the world's largest economies and emerging military rivals - to work toward peace and stability. Along with its rapidly advancing nuclear and long-range missile capabilities, it has its artillery and short-range missiles trained on Seoul, the capital of USA ally South Korea and a city of more than 10 million people.
But as Presidents Trump and Xi scooped sorbet and sipped wine ahead of high-stakes talks on North Korea, trade and other issues, the US military fired 59 missiles at a Syrian airfield in retaliation for a recent chemical attack that killed scores of civilians. I think he goes into [Friday's] discussion with much greater credibility and leverage ... "We pray for the lives of the wounded and for the souls of those who have passed", Trump said. "[China] maintains that disputes should be peacefully resolved through political and diplomatic means such as dialogue and consultation", Hua said.
Secretary Commerce Wilbur Ross said the most significant part of the summit was President Xi's agreement to a 100-day plan for trade talks aimed at boosting US exports and reducing China's trade surplus with Washington. But the United States president later agreed to respect the "One China" policy in a telephone call with President Xi in February.
The timing of the USA strike is remarkable. "I think that such logic accompanies these two events - the bombing and the summit", Russian military expert Vladimir Evseev said.
On April 6, the Chinese leader dined with Donald Trump at the property mogul's Mar-a-Lago resort, with Trump later telling reporters that he had "developed a friendship" with Xi.
The White House downplayed expectations for a breakthrough on issues like trade and tariffs, insisting the 24-hour summit is mostly an introductory meeting for the two leaders. Within Trump's administration, divisions remain over how to approach China.
President Donald Trump had predicted a "very difficult" meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
"I think he is anxious", the former presidential candidate added. While U.S. intentions and policies for the region are unclear, and while it is an unpredictable actor, it will be hard to bring together the global coalition necessary to solve the civil war.
The two presidents are believed to have discussed key issues affecting the bilateral relationship, including trade and the North Korean threat to worldwide stability.
