New York Yankees Jordan Montgomery deliver the ball to the Chicago White Sox during the first inning of a baseball game, Monday, April 17, 2017, at Yankee Stadium in New York.
Game Summary: The Chicago White Sox snapped the Yankees eight game winning streak at Yankee Stadium Tuesday evening.
On a 2-0 pitch Severino, essentially with the game on the line, let go a lazy 83-mph slider that Avisal Garcia crushed for a three-run homer to put the White Sox up, 4-0.
I'm still in the high from that ridiculous Aaron Judge home run. His changeup was in the mix in the middle of the game towards the late. It's just continued with guys that have given us distance.
Their collective efforts weren't enough, however, to keep up with the Yankees, who blasted three home runs off Rule 5 selection Dylan Covey in the series finale.
Matt Holliday's three-run homer keyed a five-run third, and Aaron Judge hit a two-run shot in the fifth.
"Everything's clicking", catcher Austin Romine said. "They want that opportunity".
Almost five years later, Montgomery found himself on the mound Monday night at Yankee Stadium with the Yankees off to their best start in seven years and dealing with the pressure of facing major league hitters. But the 24-year-old lefty calmly pitched his way out of it by retiring cleanup hitter Jose Abreu and streaking Avisail Garcia with runners at second and third.
"He pitched great", Holliday said. "He's got a very veteran demeanor to him".
Gonzalez (8 1/3 innings, four hits, one run, four strikeouts, one walk) isn't the most consistent White Sox starter in history, but there's been a steadiness in his ability to rebound unfazed from his off-nights.
And for one thing, it is now known that Severino will not rattle on the mound after giving up the home run ball. Kevan Smith grounds out to shallow infield, Adam Warren to Chris Carter. He also hit two batters.
RHP Masahiro Tanaka (1-1, 8.36 ERA) starts Wednesday's series finale for NY, and RHP Dylan Covey (0-0, 1.69) goes for Chicago. Chase Headley homers to center field.
Francisco Lindor broke the game open with a two-run triple in the sixth and struggling slugger Edwin Encarnacion also went deep for the Indians.
The Brewers staked Jimmy Nelson to a 5-0 lead in the third, but the right-hander couldn't make it hold, allowing seven runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.
"I honestly don't look at it too much", Judge said of the distance. "I have to adjust to that". It was the center fielder's third career home run in 166 games.
Joe Girardi was particularly impressed with Tanaka's ability to work out of trouble. "Holland's really tough on left-handers", Girardi explained. "When the doctor comes in and sees him, we'll know more about what his status is for the future".
"I'm swinging at the right pitches now". As a pinch-hitter, against the tall righty Michael Ynoa (who I vividly remember as the top 2008 IFA signee), Hicks lined one just over the short porch for a solo home run. "We [now] start with the White Sox who have been playing pretty well lately". Renteria (knee inflammation) said he was down to using one crutch and will have an MRI.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are 20-7 in Tanaka's last 27 home starts, and 52-25 in Tanaka's last 77 starts. SS Didi Gregorius (right shoulder strain) is to begin a rehab assignment with Class A Tampa on Friday.
NEW YORK (AP) - Miguel Gonzalez ended his road woes with a flourish.
Although the Yankees saw their eight-game winning streak stopped Tuesday, they are ahead of schedule when compared to last season.
