Donald Trump says he fired James Comey because he was 'unpopular'

Citing two sources, the Times claims that, on January 4, Flynn informed White House counsel Don McGahn that the F.B.I. was investigating his ties with Inovo BV, a Dutch company owned by Ekim Alptekin, chairman of the Turkish-American Business council.

Michael Flynn told Donald Trump's transition team that there was a federal probe into secret lobbying work he'd done for Turkey during the presidential campaign, The New York Times reported.

Mr Trump on Thursday also denied ever asking Mr Comey to shut down the FBI's investigation into his former national security adviser, Mike Flynn. The job gave Mr. Flynn access to the president and almost every secret held by American intelligence agencies. The two men, according to the aide, "never" had a personal relationship and suggested the two may have never had a personal meeting during the transition. And despite the warning, Trump picked Flynn for the national security post.

Neither Flynn nor Trump have commented on the story published by the New York Times - but Trump has shared his opinion of the publication before, calling it "fake news". On Wednesday, the Department of Justice named former FBI Director Robert Mueller to be special counsel investigating Russian efforts to influence the USA presidential election.

Yates, a career prosecutor until Barack Obama tapped her to be the No. 2 at the Justice Department, recalled the questions the White House counsel had about Flynn: Why did DOJ care? Even though he fired him, Trump has continued to heap praise on the retired lieutenant general, has defended his communications with Russian Federation and possibly attempted to obstruct justice in order to clear his former adviser's name.

Second, Flynn was one of the earliest and most outspoken supporters of Trump.

In that role, Pence oversaw the transition's work to build out the future Trump administration and quickly booted several of the Christie-aligned transition officials who had been working to fill out a potential administration before Trump was elected. The day after Flynn was sacked, Trump allegedly asked Comey to drop an ongoing probe into Flynn's links with Russian Federation.

Loyalty, while not a virtue he seems to practice often himself, is one of the qualities Trump admires most in others. "Flynn always believed that Trump would win". And Flynn was there nearly from the very beginning - blasting the Republican establishment, leading the "lock her up" chants against Hillary Clinton and, generally speaking, doing whatever was asked of him by Trump.
