Peter Capaldi now plays the show's "12th Doctor". With that, all eyes are now turning to who will replace Capaldi as the number thirteen.

The BBC tweeted on Friday (July 14) that it will announce the identity of Doctor Who's new star on Sunday after the Wimbledon Men's Final.

The actor and new head writer Chris Chibnall will officially take over for the episode's final scene (where The Doctor will regenerate into the 13th incarnation) before returning for a full series some time next year.

The identity of the next Doctor is a secret more closely guarded this time than it ever has been in the past. He's also the creator and showrunner of Broadchurch, whose finale aired this past April. The current frontrunner is Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who worked on Broadchurch with Chibnall.

However, Kris Marshall is still tipped as the favorite, with some claiming he has already taken over the role.

A recent YouTube interview with the 32-year-old actress was subsequently shown in which she avoided discussing the rumours, claiming: "I am not allowed to say anything about that one way or the other".

But, as of now, fans just have to sit back and wait as (whether you are happy by this or not) by end of day Sunday we will know who the next "Doctor Who" is.

What we do know is that no matter who the new Doctor is, all signs point to this weekend being the first time that they've made an appearance in some sort of official capacity - including on the show's set.
