But he has privately floated potential replacements for Priebus, including Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, deputy national security adviser Dina Powell, chief economic adviser Gary Cohn and former campaign adviser David Urban, according to three people who've been in conversation with the president and senior staffers recently.
That none in the White House came forth to Preibus' defence can only be ominous development for the chief of staff, who has seen his power base erode steadily with each passing day of the Trump administration.
The then press secretary Sean Spicer said at the time that Ms Yates "has betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order created to protect the citizens of the United States". He told reporters that Priebus was "a good man", and thanked him for his service. "I used to think, when I'd go to all of my trips up to Bethesda, Walter Reed, I'll go to the funerals with the secretaries of defense, that I could somehow imagine what it would be like", Kelly said.
When Blitzer pressed Priebus on if Trump tried to talk him out of quitting, Priebus said, "No, we talked about it." .
Sanders told reporters that Trump began the process of appointing a new chief of staff some two weeks back.
Speaking earlier in New York, Trump offered effusive praise for Kelly, though he didn't hint he would soon be working from the West Wing.
"I'm not going to get into that personal stuff", he said. "That's me and the president", Scaramucci said on CNN. Scaramucci cited the same tidbit as evidence of their existing ties when he gave his first press conference later that day. I'll get to the person who leaked that to you. Donald Trump is a failing president.
"I'm always going to be a Trump fan, I'm on team Trump and I look forward to helping him achieve his goals and his agenda for the American people."
It was a dramatic exit for Priebus who was in Trump's motorcade when the announcement was made.
Scaramucci was appointed director of the White House Office of Public Liaison and Intergovernmental Affairs in January, sparking internal administration feuding linked to Priebus, the former RNC chairman, during his Office of Government Ethics vetting process. That's a highly unusual arrangement for a communications director and a possible reflection that Priebus' standing with Trump is often uncertain.
In a statement, Priebus said it had been one of the great honours of his life to serve Trump and the country. "John Kelly is one of our great stars". Both are from Wisconsin and are longtime friends.
"I plan on continuing to serve and report directly to President @realDonaldTrump at the @WhiteHouse, as I've done since 1/20/2017", Scavino tweeted over the weekend. But what remains to be seen is whether Trump will listen to him as Kelly seeks to bring order to a White House beset by chaos.
Asked what he meant by including Priebus, Scaramucci said, "If Reince wants to explain he's not the leaker, he can do that".
