Manchester United are reportedly willing to trigger the rumoured £36m release clause in Sergi Roberto's Barcelona contract this summer.

The paper had previously reported the youth graduate of La Masia's release clause is €40m - although this has not been confirmed - while Barca have no desire to negotiate.

It all feels like an operation to strengthen Roberto's stance at Barcelona, and that's likelier to be the Catalan press acting independently, rather than the player's representatives trying to push the story.

Roberto started 39 games in all competitions last season, netting one goal and chipping in with six assists.

Let's not forget, Sergi was responsible for the most memorable moment for Barcelona last season when he netter a last minute victor over PSG to complete the 6-5 aggregate comeback in Champions.

He is an academy product and a first-team regular last season, making 48 appearances in all competitions and scored twice.

Nevertheless, Sergi Roberto's preference would be to prove his worth to Valverde and stay at Barca, with the club ready to end United and Chelsea's interest once and for all by offering him a new deal.

Today, Man Utd have made their move for Sergi Roberto....

Monaco are also interested in signing Sergi Roberto, according to Don Balon.

Just days after Neymar left the Nou Camp in a world record £198million transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, the Catalan giants could be set to lose another star.
