Israeli warplanes Wednesday attacked a number of targets in the Gaza Strip injuring several Palestinians, one critically, according to WAFA correspondent.

Videos and photos of the Israeli rockets striking gaza were widely circulated on social media, with many having been woken by the sound of the explosion.

Missiles and rockets are periodically fired into Israel, generally by hardline Palestinian Islamist groups opposed to Hamas.

It also claims that the raids were launched against sites belonging to the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.

"The airstrikes targeted Hamas positions in the centre of the Gaza Strip", Qasem said. "It is not beneficial for the occupation to violate this period of calm".

A medical official at Shifa hospital in Gaza City were being treated for shrapnel wounds from the explosion. "He has a fractured skull and is unconscious in the ICU", Sahbani said.

For the last decade, Hamas has been the de facto government of Gaza, while the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority has controlled the West Bank. "The IDF holds the Hamas terrorist organization exclusively responsible for the occurrences in the Gaza Strip", the IDF Spokesperson said in a statement.
