It's an unthinkable crime: Police in West Sacramento are accusing a 33-year-old father, Robert Hodges, of murdering his three young children - all 11 and under - inside the family's apartment. Moya said the results of autopsies are expected to be released Friday.

Police described the woman as a domestic violence victim but did not explain the extent of her injuries.

The mother is Mai Hodges, who works as a cashier at Thunder Valley Casino northeast of Sacramento, said casino spokesman Doug Elmets.

"Obviously, she's traumatized, and it's going to take some time to find out what's going on", Kinney said of the mother.

The children's great-grandmother, Irene Aiello of West Sacramento, said relatives were unaware of any previous marital disputes between the couple, who had been married more than a dozen years.

She didn't know the Hodges children personally, but could barely speak above a whisper as she thought about what happened to them.

"We don't understand what happened, we really don't", Aiello said. "Everything appeared to be okay between the couple". (These apartments are) so quiet.

According to reports, cops were called to a West Sacramento apartment over reports of an incident of domestic violence - hours before the kids died.

A California man has been arrested for the murder of his three children.

Someone - it's not clear whether it was the mother - managed to dial 911 from inside the apartment, but, by the time police arrived, it was too late for the children.

Hundreds of people gathered at a vigil for the children Thursday night at an elementary school, leaving candles, stuffed animals and signed cards in their honor. Guidance counselors and chaplains will be at the school at least through the rest of the week to help students, teachers and parents deal with the tragic deaths.

"It's just unbelievable. I mean, what's the explanation?" said William Crawford, who said he had a friendly relationship with his neighbors across the hall.

"It's just unbelievable. I mean, what's the explanation? You'd have to be insane to do something like that".

Hodges did not have a significant criminal history and a neighbor said he seemed like a good father before the slayings, according to the newspaper. Check back with CrimeOnline as additional details become available.

"They were attractive great-grandbabies", Aiello said.
