Elliott will take the place of Caleb Sturgis, who has a hip flexor injury.
Elliott, a former standout at the University of Memphis, was the Bengals' fifth-round draft pick this year. "He could then rejoin the active roster during the bye week for the final seven games of the regular season", David George said in his piece on the Eagles' official website. He was expected to be their kicker this season, but struggled during the preseason and lost out to veteran Randy Bullock.
So the Eagles will be auditioning kickers to replace Sturgis this week. He graduated as the Tigers' all-time leading scorer with 445 points on 202 PATs and 81 field goals. If Sturgis goes on injured reserve, the Eagles would not be able to activate him for eight weeks. He went 3 for 3 in last Sunday's win but went 1 for 2 on extra points.
Head coach Doug Pederson confirmed the team will bring in kickers to work out, and Mike Garafolo of NFL.com notes Mike Nugent - recently released by the New York Giants - will be expected to receive a look. But now Elliott will get the chance to start for the Eagles as he fills in for Sturgis. He made 81 of 104 field goal attempts as a member of the Tigers, and he was a flawless 202-for-202 on extra points.
