While the IOC had initially planned to decide only on the 2024 host city, the committee moved earlier this year to offer hosting duties for the 2024 and 2028 games to Paris and Los Angeles. "Both cities are very enthusiastic about the Games and are promoting the Olympic spirit in a fantastic way", Bach added. The IOC chose to award two games at the same time in a history-making vote, putting the rubber stamp on the pre-determined conclusion.
The IOC sought to give the Games to France because Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, was retiring and wanted to have the Games in his home country. For Los Angeles, it would be the third time hosting after previous stints in 1932 and 1984.
Those Games are part of Los Angeles's long Olympic history. "The notion that "L.A.is going to have the Olympics, one way or another" isn't necessarily true, as many opportunities still exist to intervene and stop them entirely".
Most memorably for current Angelenos, the city hosted in 1984 at a time when the International Olympic Committee was in crisis.
This ends a string of unsuccessful bids by Paris after they tried to land the 1992, 2008 and 2012 Olympics.
LA stepped forward, and as the only bidder did not sign a host city contract guaranteeing the Games.
"In the last six weeks I have been excited about a decade, 10 years to think about that, to re-imagine that and to deliver that".
The race began early in 2015 with a different US candidate but the abysmal public support for Boston forced that city to part ways with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) who turned to Los Angeles instead just days before the application deadline.
The 83 members of the International Olympic Committee in Lima gathered in a presentation room set up especially for the host city decision.
In September of that year, Los Angeles stepped back in as the USOC's pick to replace Boston.
Said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, who was heavily involved in the bid: "This is a momentous day for the people of Los Angeles and the United States". At the time, they committed to working out a deal that culminated with each city getting an Olympics on Wednesday. "Well, what you see onstage here today reflects who we are, and the unique brand of California-cool that we will bring to the 2028 Games".
He said he can't wait for his city to welcome the global event back.
