'Raging Bull' boxing great Jake LaMotta dies aged 95

Legendary boxer Jake "The Raging Bull" LaMotta dies at the age of 95.

"Rest in Peace Pop", his daughter Christi wrote on Facebook late Tuesday. In a fight that went down in history and was nicknamed the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre, LaMotta fought hard but took a beating, and he lost after the victor stopped LaMotta in the 13 round.

That bout came three years after a fight LaMotta admitted to throwing, when stopped by Billy Fox in a match he later revealed he purposely lost when questioned by a US Senate committee investigating organised crime.

Boxing instruction during a teenage stint in reform school for burglary - boyhood friend and fellow fighter Rocky Graziano was there at the same time - smoothed his style, and LaMotta was fighting professionally when he was 19. The two fighters squared off six times with Robinson winning five, but LaMotta dropped Robinson multiple times and his gutsy performance endeared him to boxing fans worldwide. "Somebody, somebody up there is trying to tell me something", he said.

The black-and-white Raging Bull is considered among the greatest sports movies of all time.

Full name Giacobbe "Jake" LaMotta and nicknamed "The Bronx Bull" and later "The Raging Bull" was amazingly portrayed by Robert DeNiro in the 1980's movie of the same name. He said that he had been promised a return fight for a title. After two more title defenses, LaMotta and Robinson met again on February 14, 1951. Trailing badly, LaMotta knocked out the challenger with 13 seconds left.

LaMotta took a beating in the later rounds of the fight, but he refused to go down until the referee stepped in to save him from further punishment.

The Bronx native lost the first fight in a unanimous decision to Robinson, but fared much better in the rematch in Detroit. Then I realized that it was the truth.

He paid tribute to LeMotta shortly after hearing about his death.

On June 16 1949, he became middleweight champion when Marcel Cerdan could not continue after the 10th round.

LaMotta was married seven times, his last marriage in 2013. He is survived by his four daughters.
