Bayern Munich Superstar Thomas Muller admits he was close to joining long time seeker Manchester United after he felt a need for change two years back.

Speaking about his decision to stay with the German champions, he said: "There was a stage when the subject arose two years ago when I considered it, but then the club immediately backed me and I was told I belong here".

This was confirmed by the remarks of club legend Stefan Effenberg, who stated: "On the one hand, he's attacked the philosophy of the club, Uli Hoeness has already said several times that they will not spend totals by €100 million or €150 million".

"When Bayern told me they needed me and how I am an important player, I did not have to think that much anymore".

Muller is now an integral part of the Bayern squad despite having a rough season a year ago.

Ancelotti led Bayern to the Bundesliga title in his first season but Paolo Maldini - his captain at AC Milan from 2001 to 2009 - said winning the Champions League might be an unrealistic goal. The forward is also an integral part of the German national team and prolific on the worldwide stage, with 87 caps and 37 goals.

He only notched five Bundesliga goals in 2016-17 and endured a 999-minute league goal drought.

Nagelsmann, who is contracted to Hoffenheim until 2021, has all but issued a come and get me plea to the Bavarians, and has quite clearly expressed his intentions to manage in his hometown.

Muller added: "I don't have the feeling something will happen".

"I was under contract but I'm the sort of person who is very open about his plans". If I drop dead tomorrow, there will be a funeral, yet on Friday, 11 players will still be out on the pitch.

"In contrast to other top clubs in Europe, this club is naturally grown and has a special mentality with reasonable values".

Bayern Munich will play host to Anderlecht in the first game of the UEFA Champions League for both sets of teams.
