Seattle Mayor Ed Murray Resigns After Latest Accusation of Sex Abuse

Murray, the city's first openly gay mayor and a Democrat who fiercely opposed Donald Trump, resigned on Tuesday after his younger cousin, Joseph Dyer, became the fifth person to accuse him of historic child sexual abuse, The Seattle Times reported. Dyer is the fifth man to accuse the mayor of sexual abuse.

Urbanist Cary Moon had done so prior to the latest allegations, first in May, and reiterated that sentiment in a press conference on Tuesday, calling Murray's response to the allegations "deeply inappropriate and harmful".

Seattle Council President Bruce Harrell will become Mayor upon Murray's resignation, which is effective Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Murray defends himself by claiming Dyer's accusations are in fact lies generated by a quarrel between their families.

In July, newly released documents showed that an OR child-welfare investigator in 1984 had found Simpson's allegations valid.

"This political effort to end my public career may have looked like it succeeded, but today I can say to those who were behind this, you were not successful. Because I think the city needs to focus on some very important critical issues".

Politician and mayoral candidate, Jenny Durkan, endorsed Murray's decision to resign from his position, while questioning his background. Moon said Murray should resign from office and that there are "plenty of competent people in the mayor's office" who can keep things running.

On Tuesday, Simpson said, "If nothing else happens, and nothing else comes of it, for me, I will be OK". "Unfortunately, we know that there is another victim because I know that there are several more victims that haven't come forward".

The mayor is now facing a lawsuit filed by Delvonn Heckard, a 46-year-old man who alleges Murray molested him in the 1980s when he was a troubled, drug-addicted teen. "I still want to face him", Heckard said. He was also accused of sexual assault in 1984, but charges were not filed. A Portland child welfare official concluded Murray likely did sexually abuse Simpson, but he was never criminally charged, according to the Seattle Times. "He did so. I think that's best for the city", Durkan said.

A former state legislator instrumental in pushing for passage of gay rights laws, Murray said his accusers' claims "paint me in the worst possible historical portraits of a gay man...."
