A Hardee County deputy and a motorist were killed in a two-car accident early Sunday morning, the Hardee County Sheriff's Office said.

Hardee County was in a curfew at the time of the accident.

"She had been working in a shelter all night, and ran home to get some supplies", when the crash occurred at 6:45 am (1045 GMT), he said. The vehicles hit each other head-on.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hardee County Sheriff's Department, the Florida Department of Corrections and their families!" Sgt. Ossman, a 21-year veteran, was driving to work with the crash occurred, the Miami Herald reported.

Bridges was a 13-year veteran with the Hardee County Sheriff's Office.

"Our Chaplain is on duty and will begin providing grievance counseling to our staff".

It was not yet known if the crash was directly related to the approach of Hurricane Irma along the west coast of Florida. "It is because of their work we are able to live in a state where people can raise their families safely", Scott said.

A total of at least 25 people have died as a result of the hurricane.
