Urban Meyer weighs in on Ohio State's passing game

Oklahoma comes to Columbus with youngest head coach in FBS

Alabama still AP No. 1 as Penn State, Oklahoma move into Top 5

Ohio State defeated the Sooners 45-24 last season.

With the overall strength of the Big Ten at the top and in the middle, it's unlikely that any team will finish the year undefeated. Thanks to a ruling in 2016 that allowed Mayfield to regain an extra year of eligibility after transferring to Oklahoma from Texas Tech, where he walked on, he now has a chance to do it three times after he returned for his senior season.

"We've never been here for a team to sing a fight song on our field". Riley was the offensive coordinator the last two seasons and led an offense that ranked third in the nation in scoring offense (44.2 points per game) during that time.

"He's a great tight end", Ohio State safety Damon Webb said. The perception of Mayfield and Oklahoma going forward will be shaped by what happens in Columbus on Saturday night against the Buckeyes, who have lingering questions on offense and in the secondary but boast a ton of talent, especially on an absurdly loaded defensive line. Will they repeat what they did a year ago against Oklahoma? Now, instead, the Buckeyes and Irish will compete twice this weekend in a home-and-home series on September 8th and 10th. However, Baker Mayfield and numerous Sooner starters got lots of rest after they got pulled from the game at halftime. He became the youngest head coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision, the top level of college football, in June when Bob Stoops resigned after 18 seasons.

But Campbell, whose six catches in Ohio State's opening win at in included a 74-yard touchdown, also acknowledges that players know when the stage is bigger.

Tom VanHaaren: This one is tough because I thought Northwestern was going to surprise a lot of people this season.

Limiting the Ohio State pass rush - The wording here is key, as fully containing the rush seems like a near-impossible task with Nick Bosa, Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis and Jayln Holmes off the edge, and not forgetting Dre'Mont Jones from the interior.

"Tyrrell worked really hard to earn that job and went out and played really, really well, " Maryland coach D.J. Durkin said.

If anybody can get a push on Ohio State's mighty front, it might be the Sooner line, but we don't yet know much about Sooner running backs and whether they'll be able to take advantage. Remarkably, it was the only game out of 13 in which he did not average over nine yards per pass attempt, and it was the only time he didn't complete 60 percent of his passes.

Ohio State has a tough conference schedule this year, having to play both Penn State and Michigan State at home and Michigan on the road, with the Nittany Lions and Wolverines now ranked fourth and eighth in the AP Poll, respectively.

What are your predictions for the big game?

For now, only four teams in all of college football earn a bid to the playoff, but there are five major conferences.

OU couldn't have asked for more than a dominant win to start the year, but it will need an even more impressive performance to outlast the Buckeyes.

On defense, the Sooners finished 68th nationally past year in points allowed per game, but the bulk of their struggles came in the early part of the season.

"I mean everybody that was here for last year's huge loss definitely remembers that", said Mayfield. "Thirty-eight plays of no gain or lost yardage".

For most of the season opener at Indiana, Ohio State's defense struggled to slow down Hoosiers quarterback Richard Lagow and wide receiver Simmie Cobbs.

Last year's loss to Ohio State has everything to do with this season.

Add Mike Weber, last year's starter, into the mix at running back this week and the offense could be that much more lethal. Running the ball against Oklahoma's defense most likely will be more hard that at Indiana.
