Advocates against domestic violence raise awareness through statistics at Ohio Statehouse

As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, CASDA wants to remind those experiencing domestic violence they're looking to fight for change.

The designated color for Domestic Violence Awareness Month is purple, and Campbell presented Lucas with a stack of magnetic ribbons at the meeting to place on deputies' cruisers. Tragically, for many men, women & children, home life is destroyed by fear, physical violence & emotional abuse, often causing lifelong trauma. In 2016-17 Abigail's Arms, served 1,032 residential and nonresidential clients who were impacted by violence.

"It's always been a hush-hush topic", says CODA board member Tammy Kind.

Cmdr. Hurd spoke of the importance of combating domestic violence as a community in his remarks at the event. That is why the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Housing and Urban Development are engaged in the critical work of funding domestic violence shelters and hotlines.

Parker also said NY is the number-one state in the country for domestic violence. "And so, we're just here to bring awareness to the forefront and know that other people might be fighting a tougher battle than they are".

During the event, a moment of silence was observed for both victims and survivors of domestic violence, accentuated with a ceremonial ship's bell tolling in honor of those who have lost their lives to domestic violence.

In addition to purple lights hung throughout the area, LACASA will also hold its 21st Domestic Violence Candlelight Vigil at 7pm tomorrow night.
