The mayor said the city is backing the bid assembled by Gary and the Northwest Indiana Forum as well.

Amazon itself set a deadline for the search to end on October 19.

Some cities are actively trying to impress the company, which has promised to hire 50,000 full-time employees after the $5 billion HQ2 project is completed. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sent a letter yesterday to Amazon's CEO selling the virtues of investing in Canada, to help all Canadian cities with their bids.

In a news release issued by the city of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, the political entities said they were joined in making the bid by "numerous local partners", in addition to GCP, Team NEO and the state of Ohio.

Jackson said in a statement, "In recent days we worked with public, private and civic leaders across our community to tell the story of Cleveland's resurgence and pursue this enormous opportunity".

Based on the company's seven year history in downtown Seattle, a headquarter would create thousands of additional jobs outside of the company, would bring in new investments from companies moving to the area to be closer to Amazon, and could increase the personal income of non-Amazon employees by $17 billion.

Seventy-three community groups from cities across the USA have signed onto a "wish list" for Amazon in an open letter.

Mr. Thomson said he still isn't sure Amazon would put its second headquarters anywhere outside of the US, but said the company may like the comparative ease of attracting and moving foreign employees to Canada compared to the United States.
