"We are pushing for people to have escape plans for their houses in case of fire", Edmonds said about the motto.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, Fire Prevention Week runs from October 8-14, 2017. The key message this year is to come up with two ways to make it out of every room in your house.
This year's Fire Prevention Week, themed "Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!" is this Sunday through Saturday.
"Developing and practicing a home escape plan is like building muscle memory", stated Fraser Kirby, assistant chief of the Banff Fire Department, on the town's website. "Smoke detectors are sensitive because we want to give you the maximum amount of time to get out before it becomes so bad that you can't".
Cambridge fire department will have a display set up at Cambridge Centre for Fire Prevention Week. Call the fire department from outside the home - from a neighbour's home or a cell phone.
Activities will include a fire hose demonstration, a demonstration on cooking fires, advice for building a safety kit, and other fire safety tips including burn care, Robidoux said.
President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the first National Fire Prevention Week on October 4-10, 1925, beginning a tradition of the president of the United States signing a proclamation recognizing the occasion. "Most fatal fires occur in the home, and I've seen the tragedy that can result when people don't get out", said State Fire Marshal Ostroskey.
If windows or doors in your home have security bars, make sure that the bars have emergency release devices inside so that they can be opened immediately in an emergency.
"One of the things we want them to do with their families, is when they go home, we give them a little bit of homework", says Capt. Thomson.
Make sure the house number is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find. That is why home escape planning is so critical in a fire situation. The presence of smoke detectors can be the single-biggest lifesaver in the event of a fire. Youth will be able to experience the department's Mobile Prevention Experience Unit, enjoy a puppet show, try on firefighter gear and get an up-close view of fire apparatus. Practice using different ways out.
