Originally created as a tie-in promotional for Walt Disney's animated movie Mulan back in 1998, Szechuan Sauce gained a new rabid cult this last April Fool's after the surprise release of the Rick & Morty Season 3 premiere. McDonald's will offer Szechuan, along with an array of other possibly delightful sauces, at select locations on Saturday, Oct. 7th as part of a wider promotion for their new Buttermilk Crispy Tenders. Now, though, the fast food chain is planning on bringing the sauce back in full force for one day only. Later in the episode - following a prison break, multiple mind swaps and Rick's casual destruction of a galactic empire - he reveals to Morty that his only real motivation in life is getting his hands on the discontinued Szechuan sauce. "It's a great moment for McDonald's and our fans that I'm definitely not taking for granted". The Szechuan sauce is actually one of 10 offerings altogether for the chain's chicken tenders.
Rick and Morty reminded viewers of the sauce in a the season 3 opening episode.
In a statement Thursday, the fast-food giant describes it as a "savory and slightly sweet sauce with hints of soy, ginger, garlic, and slight vinegar notes". "I'm excited to try (the sauce) to see what all the fuss is about".
In July, McDonald's sent a jug of Szechuan sauce to the show's co-creator Justin Roiland after finding it in "a dimension where it's always 1998".
The official website of the sauce lists the McDonald's at 804 S Riverside Dr as the only Iowa franchise where fans will be able to get it. One of the lucky winners put their jar up on eBay, where bidding reached excesses of $15,000. "Super limited-run Szechuan Sauce, only on 10/7!"
The sauce will come, according to a report, in a standard sized packet and has matching art to the alien-themed limited edition posters that McDonald's will be giving out on Saturday as well.
