The Surface Book 2 sports 8th-generation Intel processors, compared to the MacBook Pro's 7th-gen processors. Microsoft calls it "twice as powerful" as the MacBook Pro, and the company seems to be targeting Apple even more aggressively than it did past year, retaining the Surface Book's USB-A ports and SD card reader while adding USB-C support. All models of Surface Book 2 are fanless, meaning they're quiet even when operating at peak capacity, and offer 17 hours of battery life. The 15-inch model's $2,499 base price may seem relatively steep, but that's only $100 more than the 15-inch Apple MacBook Pro, for a 2-in-1 with more powerful graphics. "There has never been this much computational power in a mobile form factor this light", notes Microsoft.
Inside, both models are powered by the 7th generation Intel "Kaby Lake" processors as well as the new 8th generation Intel "Coffee Lake" processors. Storage capacity boils down to a 256GB, 512GB or 1TB PCIe solid-state drive (SSD).
Meet Microsoft Surface Book 2, the all-new and the most powerful Surface device ever created by the Redmond giant.
It was only a matter of time before we got a 15-inch version of the Surface Book-it just makes sense for a computer that is packed with high-end specs. For tablet mode, users remove the display from the keyboard so that it becomes just a tablet, while for studio mode, users fold the laptop down and draw on it using the Surface Dial and Surface Pen.
In terms of design, the Surface Book 2 looks identical to its predecessor but Microsoft claims that they have improved backlit keyboard and the flexible hinge. The 15-inch model is nearly identical to the 13.5-inch model-it's got the same processors, battery life and graphics capabilities. The Surface Book 2 13 is apparently three times more powerful than the original Surface Book.
"The 15" Surface Book 2 delivers nearly seven million dazzling pixels - 45% more than the MacBook Pro - giving artists and professionals alike unbelievable pixel density on an even larger creative canvas. It can handle most of the popular PC games and will match the graphics performance of game consoles like Xbox One.
Surface Book 2 is ready for Windows Mixed Reality Ultra.
The software giant also began rolling out a new major update to its Windows 10 operating system on Tuesday, something it now does twice a year.
But if you opt for the 15-incher, you get even better graphics: Each 15-inch model includes an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 dGPU with 6 GB of GDDR5 graphics memory.
The new Surface Book 2 starts at $1,499 for the 13-inch model and $2,499 for the 15-inch. Deliveries will start from December 16. Both are available for pre-order November 9, and generally available on November 16.
