House arrest likely punishment for arrested UCLA players

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Ball, Riley and Hill will likely serve 20 days of house arrest at the hotel for the incident and a permanent ban from re-entering the country. That process could take months, during which time, the three players will remain at the Hangzhou hotel.

As he was leaving the hotel later Wednesday, LaVar said: "I'm going to wait until I get some more intel on what's going on, and then I can tell you what's up".

Three UCLA basketball players, including LiAngelo Ball, were arrested on charges of shoplifting during the team's excursion to China for an exhibition game. Hua Chunying, a spokeswoman for China's Foreign Ministry, said the case had been reported to U.S. authorities.

Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said the conference was directing specific questions about what transpired to UCLA.

Ball, Riley and Hill were questioned about stealing from a Louis Vuitton store during the team's visit to Hangzhou, home of the game's sponsor, e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.

If tried and convicted, LiAngleo Ball and his teammates could face between three and 10 years in prison.

"We are aware of a situation involving UCLA student-athletes in Hangzhou, China".

"We are very disappointed by any situation that detracts from the positive student-athlete educational and cultural experience that this week is about", Scott said.

Due to privacy considerations, the State Department declined to comment further.

Ball's dad, LaVar Ball, seemed unbothered and not at all anxious.

The Associated Press noted Wednesday that UCLA head coach Steve Alford said the players involved won't feature in the game against the Yellow Jackets, but he couldn't provide any additional details about their status.

Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball, as quiet as he is, has become a central figure in the attention-generating Ball Family hype machine run by LaVar Ball.

Lonzo is used to focusing on basketball amid LaVar's numerous self-generated controversies. Lonzo Ball was selected second overall by the Lakers in the 2017 National Basketball Association draft and is seen as a building block for the team's future. Its first sneaker, the ZO2, raised eyebrows when it was priced at $495.

Van Gundy's contempt was seemingly more at the situation itself, than any one entity in particular, but was specifically outraged that the players would be taking an overseas trip and miss a bunch of class time.
