Microsoft challenges Amazon with SAP partnership expansion

The long-time partners said the latest integration of their products was created to encourage more of their joint customers to run SAP software on Microsoft Azure cloud services.

SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud will be available for Azure customers, allowing them to run the company's S4 HANA database products in Microsoft's cloud. Microsoft said it will use SAP S/4HANA on Azure to track its internal finances, and SAP will do the same for its own operations.

SAP also plans to move about a dozen of its own internal business critical systems to Azure. "Building on our longtime partnership, Microsoft and SAP are harnessing each other's products to not only power our own organizations, but to empower our enterprise customers to run their most mission-critical applications and workloads with SAP S/4HANA on Azure".

Microsoft now runs a number of legacy SAP finance apps, but will be moving to SAP S/4HANA Finance on Azure. "Together, we will help companies win the customer-driven growth revolution".

More enterprises are moving key systems to the cloud to realize the benefits of digital transformation, including streamlined operations and new business models. SAP's S/4Hana service is an ERP system for large enterprises, used to support activities such as finance, sales, human resources, procurement and manufacturing supply chain tracking.

The companies will document these internal projects, to better offer customers guidance and enterprise architecture for the deployment of SAP applications on Azure, according to the release.

This new agreement covers internal software development running within the cloud, as well as the ability to reach customers that use both Microsoft and SAP software.

"Microsoft and SAP are strategic partners helping us grow our wholesale and direct-to-consumer businesses". "We produce innovative products that allow our customers to pursue and enjoy their outdoor passions".

A deeper partnership with SAP could open a new path for big corporate customers to use Azure, according to industry analysts. The companies will also work on joint marketing efforts, they said. They included Coca-Cola, Columbia Sportswear, Coats and Costco.

Digital Innovation Conclave was hosted to bring out the importance of a public-private partnership.
