Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is expanding a galaxy far, far away. Johnson will outline the trilogy and is aboard to write and direct the initial entry, working alongside regular producer Ram Bergman and the Lucasfilm team.
Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy says Johnson "will do incredible things with the blank canvas".
Given we have one Star Wars film a year until 2019, plus the possibility of more spin-offs, it's likely to be beyond 2020 before the new trilogy hits theaters. Phil Lord and Chris Miller were in the middle of directing Solo: A Star Wars Story when Lucasfilm replaced them with Ron Howard, and Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) was supposed to helm the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX, but he was let go a few months ago.
