Police in Golden, meanwhile, said they found the body of a 63-year-old man after being asked on Tuesday by their Utah counterparts to conduct a welfare check at a trailer park.

He was wanted in the death of ChenWei Guo, a student from China who was found shot to death in his auto in a rugged canyon near the University of Utah campus.

However, around 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, Salt Lake City police tweeted, "Suspect in #homicide is in custody". Police said Guo and Boutain did not know each other.

This undated photo provided by University of Utah shows ChenWei Guo, a student killed in an attempted carjacking near campus Monday, Oct. 30, 2017.

Authorities now believe Boutain may be also be connected to a murder in Colorado. Police said the woman's husband, Boutain, shot Guo while trying to carjack him.

The search for Boutain spanned the mountainside near the campus.

Red Butte Canyon is used for research and has a public botanical garden, arboretum and hiking trails in the Wasatch Mountains foothills.

The victim, who was living in the RV and has family in the area, had a green pickup truck with Colorado tags that "may be at large in Utah", Harvey said.

Police have identified Austin Jeffrey Boutain, 24, and Kathleen Elizabeth Rose Boutain, 23, as people of interest in the Golden death. He had been dead for several days and his death is being investigated as a homicide.

Authorities are scouring a canyon in Utah by foot and by air for a man suspected of killing a Chinese global student at the University of Utah.

Pershing said the university has been in contact with the student's parents in China.

University officials canceled Tuesday classes.

The university sent an alert at 9 p.m.to students and staff to shelter in place. They say he should be considered "armed and unsafe".

Utah Transit Authority says there will be limited light rail service and that buses won't service the campus for the reminder of the night.
