Authorities have one person in custody after two people were hurt during a stabbing in the Mall of America in Minneapolis on Sunday.

"My daughter could see people lying on the ground who had been stabbed", Kim Schwieters, who was waiting to see St. Nick with her three children, said.

The incident reportedly occurred in the men's department of Macy's shortly after 6.45pm local time in Bloomington, Minnesota.

Hearing the victim's screams, the man's family rushed to his aid, only for Abdirahaman slashing a second person before they could wrest the knife from him told Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts during a news conference.

Police say the suspect had attempted to steal the first victim's property, which was in a fitting room.

He said the others who had come to help were from the same group as the victim and he could not immediately clarify if they were family members.

"We saw two cops running toward Macy's", she said.

One Twitter user wrote: "Just lived through the scariest experience of my life". Police don't believe the suspect and victim knew each other.
