Sarandos did not offer a timeframe for when the final season of House of Cards will be available for streaming on Netflix, but he said the season will be comprised of eight episodes after the previous five seasons all featured 13 episodes each.

Spacey responded to the allegations and was quickly criticized on Twitter for coming out as gay in the same statement in which he apologized to Rapp for the for alleged sexual misconduct.

"We're really excited about bringing some closure to the show for fans", said Sarandos, speaking Monday at UBS's Global Media and Communications Conference in NY.

Netflix has chose to move forward with the final season of "House of Cards" without Kevin Spacey, a source familiar with the decision tells CNN.

Variety magazine reported last month that one suggested plan was to kill off Spacey's character and focus on Wright's Claire Underwood as a way to salvage season 6.

Sarandos says production will not continue until next year, probably to get scripts finalised. Production on the first two episodes had already been completed and a table read for episode three was on the schedule.

The Old Vic has said that an internal investigation found 20 people claimed they had been the victims of inappropriate behaviour by Spacey. The final season will not include Spacey, as previously announced.

Writing Spacey out of House of Cards isn't a stretch. It debuted in 2013 to much acclaim and immediately put Netflix on the prestige TV map.

Netflix also decided not to move forward with a film starring Spacey as Gore Vidal. Spacey was also removed from CBS' Carol Burnett 50th Anniversary Special.
