Vermont and CT were also ranked among the five healthiest states, at No. 3 and No. 5 respectively. The report also states the state has the lowest rate of diabetes.

'This report serves as an important tool for health care professionals, policymakers and communities in their collaborative efforts to address these challenges, and help build healthier communities across the nation, ' said Rhonda Randall, D.O., senior adviser to United Health Foundation, and chief medical officer, UnitedHealthcare Retiree Solutions. In the past two years, the percentage of children living in poverty decreased by 38 percent, from 17.6 percent to 11 percent of children.

The measures include immunizations of children ages 19 to 35 months, percentage of the population that's uninsured, the number of dentists per 100,000 people, and the number of mental health providers per 100,000 people.

Even though MA is at the top, there was still an increase in drug deaths here, according to the report, showing that the epidemic is affecting even the healthiest states.

In the past three years, cardiovascular deaths increased 6 percent.

The Nutmeg State joins Massachusetts, Hawaii, Vermont, and Utah at the top of a new report by the United Health Foundation, which took into account rates of infectious diseases, obesity, smoking, and a number of other factors.

Oklahoma's smoking rate has declined 25 percent in the past five years.

West Virginia, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and MS rank as the least healthy.

Colorado remains one of the least obese states in the country.

MA ranked as the nation's healthiest state for the first time ever, which may be explained in part by the high concentration of healthcare providers.
