It was a main card filled with upsets, as Rafael Dos Anjos capped off the evening with an impressive performance over five rounds to defeat former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler in the main event of UFC Fight Night in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
The first round was a pretty even affair, Dos Anjos landing several front leg kicks and big knees into Lawler's body, with the American fighting back with some strikes of his own. But RDA failed to land a decisive shot and Lawler managed to survive, although a leg injury would begin to severely hamper Lawler's movement.
The main event matchup between Lawler and Dos Anjos was very close on paper, which is why the fight was worth an extra 120 points. Now, he's calling for his shot at champion Tyron Woodley. RDA had a great moment, he went out there and did his job. "Rafael dos Anjos step up and defend that dump you call home and fight me for the interim title you filthy animal", read Covington's tweet. "Robbie Lawler is a very unsafe opponent and he's knocked out so many different people, but just being honest and keeping it 100 percent, I'm the champion for a reason".
Dos Anjos was awarded 50-45 scores by all three judges and is now eyeing up a UFC showdown against welterweight titleholder Tyron Woodley. For me, I'm just blessed.
On Woodley, dos Anjos added: "I think with me, he's got to worry about everywhere".
