Tennessee hires Jeremy Pruit as new head coach

According to Volquest.com, Fulmer had second interviews with Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker and Pruitt, who was eventually dubbed as the next head football coach. Pruitt then was the defensive coordinator at Florida State on the Seminoles' 2013 national championship team, and he was the defensive coordinator at Georgia under Mark Richt for the 2014 and 2015 seasons before returning to Alabama.

Jeremy Pruitt is the new head coach at Tennessee, and he will try to turn around a Volunteers program that is searching for the stability and prominence that hasn't been seen since the glory days under Phillip Fulmer. During that time, the Crimson Tide appeared in the College Football Playoff both years, losing to Clemson in the national championship game in 2016.

Pruitt's success this season is particularly impressive given how hard Alabama's defense has been hit by injuries.

Pruitt has always been part of a victor dating back to his early days with Alabama, but now he has been tasked with putting together plans, strategies and figuring out not only a way to defeat the Crimson Tide, but return the Volunteers to the top of the mountain. Saban is 11-0 in his career against former assistants.

What makes the 43-year-old Pruitt so special, despite never previously having been a head coach at any level? He joins Georgia's Kirby Smart, South Carolina's Will Muschamp and newly-hired Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M. He is also viewed by many as one of the top recruiters in the sport, .

Everything, if you believe high school coaching legend Rush Propst, who's now coaching one of the nation's best outside linebacker prospects in J.J. Peterson at Colquitt County (Ga.) High School. He worked an initial stint on Alabama's staff from 2007-12, when he helped the Crimson Tide win national titles in 2009, 2011 and 2012. Pruitt and Sherrer also coached together at Hoover High School from 2005-06 when Pruitt served as the defensive coordinator and Sheerer as a defensive assistant.

Anyway, here's what we think Pruitt's staff could look like at Tennessee.

It's also worth noting that teams will have a tenth assistant beginning next year.

With the early signing period now less than two weeks away, it would seem at least somewhat important that Fulmer hires someone as soon as possible. Pruitt was a 2013 finalist for the Broyles Award.
