Former classmate arrested over murder of Jewish student

Blaze bernstein suspect

Bernstein went missing on June 2 after going to a local park, Borrego Park, near his parents southern California home, where he was visiting while on winter break from the University of Pennsylvania.

After arriving at the park, Bernstein got out of the vehicle, but he never came back, Woodward said.

The court document indicated that Woodward was known in high school for holding conservative political and cultural beliefs.

Orange County Undersheriff Don Barnes said that the motive in the case is unknown, but that the sheriff's department had discovered DNA evidence to link Woodward to Bernstein's death.

Authorities say a 19-year-old University of Pennsylvania student whose body was found buried in a shallow grave in a California park had been stabbed more than 20 times. The Bernstein family is asking the public to do good deeds in Blaze's name.

Bernstein's body was found on Tuesday in a shallow grave at Borrego Park, where he and Woodward went almost a week before he was reported missing.

The following account is from a search warrant affidavit that was obtained by The Orange County Register and later sealed.

Blaze Bernstein

Woodward claimed to have dropped Bernstein off at the park around midnight on January 2 and then returned to the park an hour later after he failed to respond to Snapchats.

Woodward told investigators he left the park after Bernstein didn't return or respond to social media messages he sent him. He said the injuries were from a "fight club" he was part of and that the dirt had gotten there when he fell during the fight.

Woodward was arrested in Bernstein's death on Friday. "My thoughts are: Revenge is empty".

Woodward displayed an affinity for guns and right-wing politics, unnerving some of his classmates at the Orange County School of the Arts, in Santa Ana. "It will never bring back my son", she wrote. My only hopes are that he will never have the opportunity to hurt anyone else again and that something meaningful can come from the senseless act of Blazes murder.

Several questions remain unanswered about Bernstein's death, which jolted a community that, officials say, rarely sees such violence.

Woodward also had dirt under his fingernails, which he told authorities was due to falling into a "dirty puddle" while sparring. Woodward, meanwhile, told investigators that Bernstein had kissed him on the lips and that he pushed Bernstein away, the night Bernstein went missing. With his death, a lovely light has been extinguished, and we encourage you to continue to shine his light through acts of loving kindness. "We are heartbroken. As we lay Blaze to rest, we ask that communities around the world that were touched by Blaze's life, help us keep his memory and loving spirit alive", Gideon and Jeanne Pepper Bernstein wrote. He will be arraigned Wednesday, a Sheriff's Department spokeswoman told the Inquirer and Daily News.
