Florida's minimum wage will increase to $8.25 an hour Monday, 15 cents higher than the current rate. It will reach $15 an hour on July 1, 2021.
The wage applies to all Florida workers who are covered by the federal minimum wage, according to the Department of Economic Opportunity. Lawmakers later changed the law to only require employers to make up the difference when tips don't exceed the minimum wage.
At the time the law passed, the country's first minimum wage was $0.25 per hour. A statewide increase goes into effect Sunday. Each year, the wage is to increase with a rate of inflation.
The state's minimum wage will increase from $8.90 to $9.25. The increases were spread out over a few years to give businesses time to adjust.

The state attorney general may also bring an enforcement action to enforce the minimum wage.
Senator Sherrod Brown is in favor of this push for $15 an hour, and he has 77 pages aimed at showing why, according to an article in the Dayton Daily News in March 3, 2017.
For fast-food workers outside of New York City, the minimum wage will rise to $12.75 an hour on Dec. 31, 2018, $13.75 an hour on Dec. 31, 2019 and $14.50 an hour on Dec. 31, 2020. The minimum wage covers fast-food workers at more than 130 chains operating in NY, including Arby's, Burger King, Chick-fil-A, Dairy Queen, Domino's Pizza, KFC, McDonalds, Panera Bread, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, Subway, Taco Bell and Wendy's.
