Refresh your iPhone Battery with Apple for just $29

[Update] iPhone Batteries From Third Parties Might Not Match Apple's Price

Burn-in test shows the iPhone X beating Samsung's Note 8 and S7 Edge

So, through December 2018, if you have an iPhone 6 or higher, you can get a cheap iPhone battery replacement directly from Apple. Barclays analyst Mark Moskowitz, in a note, says that even a small percentage of people opting for battery replacement over upgrade could affect the sale of new iPhone models.

In response to customer concerns, Apple said in yesterday's online message that it will be discounting the price for out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacements from $79 to $29 for anyone with an iPhone 6 or later whose battery needs to be replaced. However, this could hit the iPhone sales, said an analyst of reserch firm Barclay.

Late a year ago it came to light that Apple has included code in the iOS operating system that throttles the performance of iPhones if the battery is showing signs of wear. This was done to help maintain battery life, not increase sales, but to users the experience was one of a handset that was getting slower (and a nudge to think about upgrading).

Apple has been critized following disclosures that the Cupertino-based tech maker was found slowing down iPhone batteries. "Our August Wireless survey suggests battery drain is No. 1 reason for users to upgrade to new device - therefore, a new battery may deter some upgrade intention", Moskowitz writes in a research note on Wednesday. It will also come in 32 GB and 128 GB variants with no clear indication whether Apple will keep it's 3.5 mm headphone jack.

It's good to know that the 10th anniversary iPhone won't really suffer screen burn-ins that much. The offer is limited to the iPhone SE, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, and the iPhone 7 Plus. The news said that the looming court battle traces its roots back in December of past year when Reddit users discovered that the makers of the popular iPhones rolled out updates that deliberately slowed down the performance of some of their previous flagship smartphone models. You can spend your time trying to get an appointment with an Apple Store, traveling to the store, waiting for your turn at the genius bar, and traveling home in order to get a $29 battery replacement.

About three-quarters of the 675 million iPhones now in use would be eligible and potentially in need of the battery upgrade, Moskowitz estimates. Essentially such tests are for information purposes only and check the battery health and life. Companies like Samsung and Alphabet Inc's (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google are likely to take swipes at Apple's iPhone throttling move in an effort to sway more consumers to pick their smartphones.

So, how could Apple have turned this boneheaded move into a positive thing?
