The Inspiring Words That Are Getting Lena Dunham Through Her Breakup

2017 Pre-GRAMMY Gala And Salute to Industry Icons Honoring Debra Lee- Arrivals

"Is it appropriate to have Lena Dunham there when it was literally just a few weeks ago she said a young black woman lied about being raped by her employee/friend?" one person asked in the comments.

Unfortunately, Girls creator Lena Dunham is not one of these women, which has made the internet collectively scratch their heads over an Instagram post she shared of a group photo of her and the women of the Times Up movement. Dunham, the commenter said, was "part of the problem" - referring to when Dunham came to the defense of Murray Miller, a "Girls" writer accused of sexual assault. And, according to Thompson, her participation in Time's Up planning was limited to the photo op: "Lena was not anywhere present in our group during the countless hours of work for the last two months".

Dunham's name also cropped up in the headlines this week after Tessa Thompson, who attended a Time's Up meeting with Dunham ahead of the Golden Globes, called the actress' appearance a "surprise" and seemed to criticize her lack of involvement with the organization. What's more, Thompson insisted, she did not "want to diminish Lena Dunham and her work, her voice, and her importance".

There's absolutely room for ongoing conversations about Dunham within the feminist space, but in this case, Thompson is returning the attention to Time's Up - which, FYI, has raised over USA $16 million. This is a time of reckoning. So many women also have real work to do. Worse, Lena has yet to publicly apologize to Aurora despite information surfacing that the perpetrator, the friend she defended, and his lawyers lied about Aurora.

She added: "Things can be, 'You know what, you're a drop of water, and then you re-enter the ocean.' Anyway, I really love you all". The Girls star noted she was unable to participate in the initiative's planning stages for "highly personal reasons", but applauded the effort and Thompson's "artistry" and "consistent candor".

We're all for unity in the face of sexual assault and harassment, but Dunham's background of defending alleged rapists may not make her the best spokesperson for this movement.

Thompson actually took the time to respond to the comments regarding Lena Dunham.
