ESPN's Chris Haynes and Ohm Youngmisuk reported the two-time All-Star would indeed begin his career in purple and gold as a reserve when the Lakers face the Mavericks on Saturday tonight.

Last season for the Boston Celtics, he averaged 28.9 points while shooting 46.3 percent from the field.

Speaking with the media shortly after acquiring Isaiah Thomas as part of a trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Lakers president of basketball operations Magic Johnson affirmed that Ball will remain the team's starting point guard, per Bill Oram of the Southern California News Group.

By doing so, the Lakers were able to create enough cap space to pursue two max free agents this coming offseason. The Lakers also received a top-three protected 2018 first-round pick. "I am happy to be here with the Lakers, happy to be with a young team that is exciting, that likes to get up and down - that's my style of play".

In their last game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Lakers were able to win easily, as both Carmelo Anthony and Russell Westbrook sat out with ankle injuries.

It's been a brutal season for Thomas so far and his plan to skip surgery on his torn hip labrum and have a strong final year ahead of his contract has backfired so far.

Thomas will effectively be given the Jordan Clarkson role where despite coming off the bench, he'll play heavy minutes especially due to Ball's injury status.

Thomas' agent was initially adamant that the point guard would not accept a role off the bench for the Lakers and there was speculation that the former Cavalier would ask for a buyout if he were not a starter. Lonzo Ball (knee) remains out, which could help Thomas see solid minutes right away, but it's unclear how playing time will be divvied up when Ball returns.
