The manufacturer reacted to shifting buyer tastes and increasingly strict emissions standards by ending production of the diesel Macan compact SUV.
Porsche has discontinued the Macan S diesel and Panamera 4S diesel, thus putting an end to its entire diesel lineup. Porsche Panamera retailed around 11,000 units across the world in 2017 and only 15% of that number was attributed to the diesel powered models.
"Diesel engines traditionally play a subordinate role at Porsche".
The brand also stated that the move was linked to "another software update" which has been the main topic for an "ongoing consultation with the authorities". Diesel Porsches have already been dropped in the USA in favor of a new electrification strategy.
However, the company says it plans to offer a diesel version of its Cayenne SUV, but adds "the exact time of the market launch is not yet clear". Then, the diesel Porsche range was gradually expanded with the Panamera and Macan. At least 210,000 Audi models sold in Europe and the United States with the engine are now being investigated for possible emissions cheating, according to a statement from the Munich public prosecutors' office. In India too, automakers are experiencing growing demand for the petrol and hybrid vehicles compared to the diesel models. "We are doubling our expenditure on electromobility from around three billion euros to more than six billion euros", said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. Unlike its petrol engines, Porsche never developed its own diesel powerplants, instead sourcing them from elsewhere within the Volkswagen Group. With the production of the Diesel engines coming to an end, Porsche will now be concentrating on its Mission-E electric auto, which is likely to make its debut in 2019.
