After telling ET that Banks - who was the first black woman to land the cover of an SI Swimsuit issue - was one of her "idols", Herrington got to walk the red carpet with the 44-year-old supermodel. Herrington is the third black woman to appear on the cover of the annual issue that launched in 1964.
Hailing from Compton, California, Herrington just began modeling a year ago and already has catapulted to the forefront of the industry by landing the iconic SI swimsuit cover issue.
Herrington hails from Compton, California, in Southern Los Angeles. She had an enthusiasm and effervescence about her - I felt like I was meeting her for the first time.
Speaking about her perception of models, she said, "The most challenging shots were ones posing with the waves splashing on you".
Darryl said it wasn't a big deal seeing his daughter in a skimpy bikini for the magazine, saying "this is her dream and as a dad, who am I to block her dream?" Before pretty faces were landing on the Instagram discover page, they were luring followers through the pages of S.I.
Remarkably, she only started her modeling career a year ago and has already landed the cover of Sports Illustrated. All those things separately don't guarantee a cover, though.
As for why the gymnast chose to be a part of the project, she told Sports Illustrated she found the concept remarkably empowering. I'm emotional, but I just want to say thank you to everyone who believed in me.
Sports Illustrated's latest issue includes unedited photos for the first time ever.
The photo team rushed to her aid, and Upton, 25, ultimately managed to emerge from the water seemingly unscathed. They've also integrated a photography campaign called "In Her Own Words" which the SI site claims, "is a continuation and evolution of the essence of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit".
