Amazon recalls 260000 portable power banks due to fire hazard

The power banks were manufactured for Amazon to be sold under the AmazonBasics label by Guoguang Electric Company, an electronics manufacturer based in China.

The models affected by this recall include the 2,000mAh, 3,000mAh, 5,600mAh, 10,000mAh, and 16,100mAh models with micro-USB cable. Amazon offers a line of its own products under the "AmazonBasics" brand.

After receiving more than 50 reports of overheating, six different version of AmazonBasics portable batteries are being recalled.

'Consumers should immediately unplug and stop using the recalled power banks and contact Amazon for instructions on how to return the unit and receive a full refund, ' CPSC warned.

Amazon is recalling some portable power banks due to fire and chemical burn hazards. The retailer is contacting known purchasers directly. These items are usually presented as an low-priced alternative to items from other known brands, and it covers a variety of products: cables, adapters, bags, and more.

AmazonBasics portable power bank charger packs are being recalled because of 53 reports in the United States of overheating including one report of chemical burns from battery acid.

They were sold at Amazon.com, Amazon Bookstores and Amazon Pop-Up Stores from December 2014 through July 2017 for $9-$40.

A dedicated website has been setup to automatically process refunds upon registering an affected product.
